Urad Curry (black lentil curry)

  • 1 bowl whole urad (black lentils)
  • 2 red onions finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon cumin seeds
  • ½ Teaspoon mustard seeds
  • 2 teaspoons simba mbili garlic powder
  • ½ Teaspoon simba mbili ginger powder
  • ½ Teaspoon simba mbili turmeric powder
  • 4 tomatoes puréed
  • 1 lemon’s juice
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • Soak the urad(black lentil) overnight. Then boil it with enough water.
  • Heat oil in a saucepan, add cumin seeds and mustard seeds. Once tempered add onions, garlic powder, ginger powder and let it cook until the onions brown a little.
  • Add tomato purée and let it cook slightly. Add the boiled urad (black lentil) and lemon juice. Let it cook until thickened. 
  • Serve hot with rice, chapaties or naan.
